My interest in art making began with traditional painting techniques and the chemistry involved in doing so. I gained much of what I know from books on the subject and informative writings from past authorities. I enjoy the craft of painting. My paintings are made with pure pigments, some of which I personally make, ground in oil. I prepare my paint in this way each time I begin. I stretch and prime my own canvas and use the best materials I can find. I choose to take these extra efforts so that I may experience the Painting process from the very beginning. Please visit Past works for some examples of these early works.
My work under the heading, Altered Objects, are genuine observations beyond the common implications of consumer products. In the works I search for the human element, the poetry that ties our nature, i.e. our products, to the broader human experience. I realize the approaches I use can be categorized as satire, wit, or just plain silly, but those are only static words and I believe there is an unseen force at work that harmonizes the relationships that occur. Perhaps we are subconsciously making products in the mirrored image of ourselves, encompassing our dialogue, habits, spiritual beliefs, and so forth. That said, my Altered Objects work is my personal summarization of the civilized world as I know it. Please visit Altered Objects to view these works.
In my current work I am exploring the possibilities of non-traditional works on silk. My fascination with silk, beyond its obvious appeal, is its amazing adaptive quality with colour, absorbing the fluid colour to embody the colour itself.
In my technique by intersecting lines during a dripping process a compositional skeleton emerges which I then fill with colour. The response I get from working on the colouration is that these individual coloured areas are more like colour filled cavities than just coloured-in shapes. The richness of colours on the silk and the play of light on its surface is very different from other materials I’ve worked with in the past.
The completion of the works consisted of strategically positioned circular cut-outs. These cut-outs function as an opportunity to incorporate the works surroundings into its colorful composition.
As an aside, because of the transparency of the silk distinct effects can also be gained depending on the surfaces these works are hung upon. These surfaces can be windows, indoor glass screens, light boxes, etc; when the aforementioned are used as a backdrop new colorific dynamics in the work can be achieved.
